Wan Xing Biographies
Wan Xing is an internationally acclaimed guzheng virtuoso, artistic curator, and interdisciplinary creator.
Renowned for her minimalist, spiritual, and deeply expressive performance style, she reimagines the guzheng as a living contemporary voice, creating innovative works that connect cultures, artistic disciplines, and communities.
An active presence on the international stage, Wan Xing is the creator and producer of Sound Strokes: A harmonics Blend of Chinese and Scottish Music , a cross-cultural performance project that received the Theatre Gold Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026, alongside five-star reviews from Scottish Field and The Wee Review. In the same year, she was invited by the Edinburgh International Harp Festival to present a featured guzheng and harp concert and to perform as a guest artist at the festival’s closing event.
In 2025, she produced and released Waves of Tradition, a pioneering album that brings together Chinese, Scottish, and Irish musical traditions. Its debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe was awarded four stars by The Scotsman. The same year, she received support from the National Arts Fund of China for the creation of Traces of Qi, an interdisciplinary project exploring new artistic possibilities through the guzheng.
Wan Xing has also established herself as a visionary curator. Her concert series Philo: Wan Xing and Friends, presented at the inaugural Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo in 2024, received wide acclaim. A later edition of the series was selected as a featured programme of Hong Kong Week 2026 in Chengdu.
In 2023, Wan Xing was selected for the Silkroad Global Musician Workshop, founded by Yo-Yo Ma, and travelled to the United States for artistic exchange and performance. She has also been commissioned multiple times by the Hong Kong Museum of Art to create original music for major exhibitions. In 2021, she was appointed Artistic Director by Hong Kong’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department for Heartstrings, a multimedia guzheng film series. One of its original compositions, Sound Strokes, was subsequently featured on the online platform of the Asia Cultural Co-operation Forum.
Driven by a belief that music can cultivate empathy and meaningful human connection, Wan Xing continues to expand the artistic language of the guzheng through intercultural collaboration, experimentation, and dialogue.
Wan Xing graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of Music from the Central Conservatory of Music in China, and a Master’s degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on a full scholarship. She also obtained her second Master’s degree in Cultural Management from the Hong Kong Chinese University.
Wan won numerous accolades including the Best Performance Award 2002 in the First Chinese Folk Instruments Competition organized by the Ministry of Culture, Gold Award (Young Performers Category) in the Second International Guzheng Competition 2011 and the Best Instructor Award 2013 in the Third International Zheng Contest.
Wan Xing has more than 20 years of teaching experiences. She has given talks, master classes and performances upon invitations of local universities and secondary schools. Many of her students have excellent achievements at different competitions both in Hong Kong, China, Macao and at international contests, for example championships at the Hong Kong Music Festivals and Asia Culture and Music Competitions in Macao. What’s more rewarding is that students become a better self with joy and satisfaction in the world of music.
