Wan Xing, based in Hong Kong, is a pioneering Zheng musician, artistic curator and educator, passionate about cross-cultural collaboration through music. Wan Xing’s music is often perceived as spiritual with oriental aesthetics, and she is aligned with her idea of composition - simple and natural. She masters diversified music styles and crossover with her Zheng. Wan Xing was invited to perform at the 45th Edinburgh International Harp Festival. In 2025, she was awarded a grant from the China National Arts Fund to create the innovative art‑technology work Traces of Qi. Building on this achievement, she will embark on a UK tour in 2026, continuing her mission to fuse Chinese and Scottish musical traditions and to promote cultural exchange on the international stage. In 2025, she produced and presented Waves of Tradition – A New Horizon in Scottish and Chinese Music with Harpist Eleanor Dunsdon and Bodhran Musician Gregor Black. The new album was released and the performance premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, receiving a four-star rating from The Scotsman (UK) and winning the admiration of audiences from all around the world.
Wan Xing Biographies
Wan Xing graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of Music from the Central Conservatory of Music in China, and a Master’s degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on a full scholarship. She also obtained her second Master’s degree in Cultural Management from the Hong Kong Chinese University.
Wan won numerous accolades including the Best Performance Award 2002 in the First Chinese Folk Instruments Competition organized by the Ministry of Culture, Gold Award (Young Performers Category) in the Second International Guzheng Competition 2011 and the Best Instructor Award 2013 in the Third International Zheng Contest.
Wan’s music is known as aesthetic with oriental spirits yet full of sense of times. She is invited by a number of organizations to musical performances and events of various disciplines, including the Hong Kong Arts Museum, the Leisure and Cultural Service Department, the Hong Kong Space Museum as well as Hong Kong Dance Company, Wuji Ensemble and Taiwan Chiuko Traditional Orchestra.
Wan Xing has more than 20 years of teaching experiences. She has given talks, master classes and performances upon invitations of local universities and secondary schools. Many of her students have excellent achievements at different competitions both in Hong Kong, China, Macao and at international contests, for example championships at the Hong Kong Music Festivals and Asia Culture and Music Competitions in Macao. What’s more rewarding is that students become a better self with joy and satisfaction in the world of music.
